João Cancelo accuses Pep Guardiola of lying
João Cancelo has accused his former coach Pep Guardiola of spreading lies about him. The Catalan said that the defender was not a good team-mate. Nothing but nonsense, according to Cancelo.
Background: Cancelo fled to FC Bayern in the winter of 2023 and six months later to FC Barcelona after being demoted to the substitutes' bench at Manchester City. The Portuguese did not exactly have the best relationship with his coach at the time, with Guardiola replacing Cancelo with Nathan Aké and subsequently stating: "You need a defender who can win one-on-one situations. We've lacked that in the past."
"His word has much more power"
Words that Cancelo does not want to let stand. "Lies have been told. I was never a bad teammate. That's just the coach's opinion," the 29-year-old defended himself in an interview with the Portuguese sports newspaper "A Bola". However, he doubts that people will believe him over the Sky Blues' long-time successful coach. "People will remember Guardiola's statements because his word has much more power than mine. I prefer to keep things to myself," says Cancelo.
At FC Barcelona, the defender is getting the minutes he had hoped for in vain in Manchester. In 32 competitive appearances this season, he has scored four goals and provided four assists.
