"Work begins"
2034 Olympics in Austria, Slovenia and Italy?
Austria, Slovenia and Italy are considering a joint bid for the 2034 Winter Olympics. "We have agreed to start work on a joint bid by Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Austria and Slovenia for the 2034 Winter Olympics," said Friuli President Massimiliano Fedriga after a meeting with Slovenian Foreign Minister Tanja Fajon in Trieste, according to the Trieste daily newspaper "Il Piccolo".
"The joint candidacy of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Slovenia and Austria is an extraordinary example of constructive cooperation. Bringing the most important sporting event in the world to our regions means retelling a story of sport, but above all of culture, peace and dialog," said Fedriga. He emphasized that Italy, Austria and Slovenia had already jointly organized the EYOF (European Youth Olympics Festival) in 2023.
"An excellent idea"
Slovenian Foreign Minister Fajon is in favor of the project. "I agree with this proposal. It is an excellent idea for Italy, Austria and Slovenia to bid together," she was quoted as saying by the daily newspaper.
The joint bid by Italy, Austria and Slovenia would most likely involve sports venues in Tarvisio in Friuli, Villach and Klagenfurt in Austria and Kranjska Gora and Planica in Slovenia. Italy has already hosted the Winter Olympics twice, in Turin in 2006 and Cortina d'Ampezzo in 1956. Milan and Cortina will host the 2026 Winter Games.
