Resolution to the UN
USA calls for “immediate ceasefire” in Gaza
The USA has submitted a draft resolution to the UN Security Council calling for an "immediate ceasefire" in the Gaza Strip. According to Secretary of State Antony Blinken, this should also include the release of hostages from Hamas control.
"We have indeed submitted a resolution, which is now before the Security Council, calling for an immediate ceasefire combined with the release of the hostages," Blinken told the Saudi Arabian media outlet Al-Hadath on Wednesday evening. He hoped that this would send a "strong signal".
Vetoed several times so far
Blinken's comments were made during a visit to Saudi Arabia for talks on the war between Israel and the Islamist Hamas in the Gaza Strip. In the past, the USA has used its right of veto on several resolutions calling for an immediate ceasefire in the war between Israel and Hamas.
The US Secretary of State met with Saudi Arabian Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on Wednesday and Blinken will travel to Cairo on Thursday. There he is due to meet Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.
