Greek fighter jet crashed into the sea off the islands
A Greek fighter jet crashed into the sea during a training flight on Wednesday afternoon. The pilot was able to eject and was taken to a Greek Air Force hospital as a precaution. Eyewitnesses spoke of an open parachute.
According to the air force, the accident occurred in the region of the uninhabited Sporades island of Psathoura near the tourist islands of Alonnisos, Skpelos and Skiathos. The cause of the crash was initially unknown. The majority of the Greek air force consists of F-16 jets - as in this case. The pilots are generally considered to be very experienced.
According to military circles, the pilot was able to eject on Wednesday. A Greek navy frigate, two helicopters and a coastguard boat were deployed following the crash in the North Aegean.
