White House: There are other ways than an invasion

There are other ways to fight the Islamist Hamas than an invasion of Rafah, the White House has announced. In a telephone call, US President Joe Biden asked Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to send a team to Washington in the next few days.

This team is to consist of military personnel, intelligence services and specialists in humanitarian aid. This was announced by Biden's National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan. Israel's military had already had recent successes, such as the death of Hamas' number three in Gaza, Marwan Issa (see video above). Israel previously claimed to have tracked down Issa, but his death was not initially confirmed.

It is doubtful that Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will actually send a team to Washington. At least he recently announced that he would stick to his plans for an offensive in Rafah in the south of the Gaza Strip despite international criticism. The city is currently home to around one million displaced people.

At least 20 dead again
Rafah and central parts of the Gaza Strip have again been attacked from the air. According to the Palestinian health authority, at least 20 people were killed and dozens more were injured. Several houses and apartments as well as a refugee camp were hit. Three women and three children were among the dead, it was reported on Tuesday. The attacks are said to have occurred on Tuesday night. The Israeli military has not yet commented.

Meanwhile, new negotiations have begun in Qatar on a ceasefire in the war and the release of further hostages. The head of the Israeli foreign intelligence service Mossad, David Barnea, is said to have already arrived and met the mediators. The talks could last at least two weeks.
