Parliament dissolved
Croatia’s Milanovic calls for elections on April 17
A new parliament will be elected in Croatia on April 17. President Zoran Milanović set this election date on a Wednesday.
The decision to set the election date in the middle of the week is reportedly surprising. As a rule, elections are held on Sundays in Croatia, although the law only stipulates that election day must be a non-working day. As April 17 is now a Wednesday, the law makes it a non-working day.
Legislative term expires regularly in July
The Croatian parliament decided to dissolve itself on Thursday, paving the way for parliamentary elections in the spring. The four-year legislative period would normally expire at the end of July.
The last time there was a deviation from the Sunday date was the parliamentary elections on January 3, 2000, when the ballot was held on a Monday.
