Lectures stopped
400 activists marched through Innsbruck city center
Lectures at Innsbruck University were first interrupted on Thursday afternoon, followed by a protest march by the "Last Generation" in the city center. The demands of the climate activists were familiar ones. According to the activists themselves, there were 400 participants - the police spoke of around 130 demonstrators.
From 4 p.m., the march set off from Marktplatz via Herzog-Otto-Straße in the direction of SOWI and continued along Sillgasse to Landhausplatz. The protest march was preceded by interruptions to lectures at the University of Innsbruck. On Thursday, the activists once again demanded that a basic right to climate protection be enshrined in the constitution. They also called for the implementation of the socially balanced recommendations of the National Climate Council.
"Civil resistance is the only choice"
"I ask myself what my knowledge, which I am taught every day at university, is worth if I myself, and especially the government, do not act accordingly. I see no other choice but to engage in civil resistance to show that I care about my future," says Katharina (26), a student of educational sciences.
Assembly leader is reported to the police
On Salurnerstraße, the participants sat down on the street without taping themselves down and chanted for around 25 minutes. "At 5.30 p.m., the assembly was broken up by one of the participants herself", according to the police. The event went off without any major incidents. "The traffic disruption was limited due to quick detour measures by the police", said the executive. The rally leader will be charged.
