Arrest! Netherlands has ex-team player extradited
Dutch professional footballer Quincy Promes, who was convicted of smuggling cocaine and arrested in Dubai on suspicion of another offense, is to be extradited to his home country.
As several Dutch media reported on Wednesday evening, the Netherlands will apply for the extradition of the 32-year-old attacking player from Spartak Moscow. This has been confirmed by the Amsterdam public prosecutor's office.
Six years in prison
The 50-time international was sentenced to six years in prison in absentia by a court in Amsterdam in mid-February. The court considered it proven that he was involved in the smuggling of around 1,350 kilograms of cocaine via the port of Antwerp in January 2020. A second defendant, a cousin of Promes, was also sentenced to six years in prison.
Promes, who was in Dubai for a training camp with his club, was allegedly involved in a traffic accident there a few weeks ago and then fled the scene of the accident. He was then arrested at the airport during his planned departure with his teammates.
