Early exit in Hungary
Dominic Thiem did not gain any self-confidence at the Kiskut Open in Szekesfehervar at tennis challenger level. The top seed from Lower Austria lost to Poland's Daniel Michalski 3:6 and 4:6 after 1:52 hours in the opening round on Wednesday. The number 295 in the ATP world rankings caused the 30-year-old ÖTV player major problems in their first ever direct duel with his strong serve and powerful strokes.
Thiem could have closed the gap again in the 2nd set, but missed a break point at 3:4. He was able to fend off a match point in the next game, but the 24-year-old Pole served out confidently on his own serve and took his second chance to end the match. This meant that the trip to Hungary, where Thiem was accompanied by former Latvian pro Karlis Lejnieks, was extremely short-lived due to a training stay at the Rafael Nadal Academy on Mallorca.
No victory yet in 2024
This means that the Lower Austrian still has no wins in the main draw in 2024. In Brisbane, he was defeated by Rafael Nadal after successfully qualifying, and at the Australian Open in Melbourne he lost in a five-set thriller to Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime.
It is planned that Thiem will now also compete at Challenger level in Zadar (next week) and Napoli (from March 25). As the ex-US Open winner and former world number three had no points to defend, he will in all likelihood also appear in the top 100 next week.
