Biden and Trump secured enough votes

US President Joe Biden and his election challenger Donald Trump have secured the necessary number of delegate votes in the current primaries to run for president again. This will lead to a re-run of the 2020 election.

Biden and Trump won their parties' primaries in the states of Georgia, Mississippi and Washington on Tuesday, according to forecasts by the major US television networks. The presidential candidates will be formally chosen at party conventions in the summer.

Trump exceeded the number of 1215 delegates he needs to be re-elected as the presidential candidate of his Republican Party. Biden, in turn, exceeded the 1968 delegates he needs from his Democratic Party.

Re-run of the 2020 election
This means that the presidential election on November 5 will be a repeat of the 2020 election, in which Biden defeated the then incumbent Trump.

Trump de facto candidate after Haley withdrawal
The 77-year-old right-wing populist Trump was de facto the Republican presidential candidate following the withdrawal of his last intra-party rival Nikki Haley from the presidential race after Super Tuesday last week. For the Democrats, the outcome of the primaries was virtually a foregone conclusion: Biden had no serious rivals from within his own ranks.

The presidential candidates of the two major US parties will be formally chosen at party conventions in the summer after the conclusion of the nationwide primaries, which run until June.
