Russian military plane crashes near Moscow
An Ilyushin Il-76 military aircraft carrying 15 people crashed near Moscow in Russia on Tuesday. The fate of the occupants was initially unknown.
It appears that an incident occurred during the take-off of the plane in the Ivanovo region. One of the four engines may have caught fire. This was reported by the RIA Novosti agency, citing the Ministry of Defense in Moscow. There were reportedly eight crew members and seven passengers on board.
A video purporting to show the ill-fated plane immediately circulated on social media. The plane is descending rapidly. The plane trails a thick tail of smoke behind it before crashing to the ground.
According to the report, the cause of the crash was a fire in one of the engines during take-off. According to the report, a commission from the main command of the Russian Air Force flew to the Ivanovo airfield.
The last time an Il-76 crashed was in January over the Russian border region of Belgorod. According to Russian sources, the plane was shot down by a Ukrainian missile. According to information from Moscow, 65 Ukrainian prisoners of war were on the plane being transported for exchange and were killed.
