Against a strong Porto
FC Arsenal vs FC Porto from 9pm LIVE
Arsenal London are through to the quarter-finals of the Champions League after beating FC Porto 4-2 on penalties.
After 45, 90 and 120 minutes, the score in London was 1-0 after Leandro Trossard (41) had scored after the home side had lost the first game in Portugal 1-0. In the penalty shoot-out, Wendell first failed to score against the bar and then first-leg goalscorer Galeno was denied by Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya.
For the Gunners, on the other hand, captain Martin Ödegaard, Kai Havertz, Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice converted confidently. They prevented their eighth consecutive elimination in this stage of the competition and sniffed quarter-final air for the first time since 2010. After taking over the lead in the league, the next highlight came.
Arsenal goal not recognized
Arsenal performed better than on Portuguese soil and overturned the deficit from the first game in the 41st minute. After an Ödegaard pass into the deep, Pepe, who was the first 41-year-old outfield player to play in the "premier class", was unable to prevent Trossard from finishing and the ball ended up in the corner. After the break, both teams produced an intense game in which the Gunners were closer to the decider. A goal by Ödegaard was disallowed due to a previous foul by Havertz (68'). Goalkeeper Diogo Costa also made several saves.
As neither team took any great risks in extra time, a penalty shoot-out was the logical consequence. Porto's defeat there meant they were knocked out in the round of 16, just like last season.
