Near-crash: Penalty against Mercedes!
That was close! There was almost a serious crash in the second practice session for the Saudi Arabian GP. At the center of it all: Lewis Hamilton - the Mercedes team receives a penalty.
On his second lap, Williams driver Logan Sargeant was driving at high speed through Turns 10 and 11 when a slow-moving car suddenly shot in front of him. Lewis Hamilton just managed to get out of the way, but clearly obstructed the American.
After the session, Sargeant and Hamilton were summoned to the stewards. The result: Hamilton got away with a warning, but his team had to pay a fine of 15,000 euros because the people in charge at the command post had not informed Hamilton about the traffic situation in good time.
"Serious mistake"
"A serious mistake by the team, especially at the speeds on this track and in turn 11," the stewards stated. Sargeant had to swerve over a kerb at over 230 km/h in sixth gear. The track in Jeddah requires enormous teamwork between pit crew and drivers.
Verstappen fastest in the long run
Traffic problems dominated the first two practice sessions. Drivers repeatedly got in each other's way on slow laps. Fernando Alonso set the fastest time in the second session, followed by George Russell and Max Verstappen. However, in the so-called long run times, which serve as an indicator of performance in the race, triple world champion Verstappen was faster than the competition, as he was at the season opener.
Qualifying will take place on Friday (18:00), while the second of 24 races will be held on Saturday (18:00), as was the case in Bahrain. The reason for this is the upcoming Muslim fasting month of Ramadan.
