Crime at a bus stop
USA: Masked men fire on students – eight injured
Eight students at a high school near a bus station in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, were injured on Wednesday afternoon, one of them seriously. According to the police, three masked men opened fire on the teenagers.
The incident occurred shortly before 3 p.m. local time near a Southeastern Philadelphia Transportation Authority bus stop located at the intersection of Rising Sun and Cottman avenues, Philadelphia Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel said.
One teen in critical condition
The injured students, all of whom attend Northeast High School, are between 15 and 17 years old, he said. One, a 16-year-old, was hit by nine bullets in the upper body and is in critical condition. The other teenagers are in stable condition, Bethel reported at a press conference on Wednesday.
Police released surveillance video (see above) showing the three masked gunmen jumping out of a Hyundai Sonata in a parking lot, rushing toward a bus stop and firing shots at a bus. The trio fired more than 30 shots, then ran back to the car and fled.
Eleven injured after shots fired on Monday
Only on Monday, eleven young people were shot - also at a bus stop - in Ogontz, a district of Philadelphia. According to Bethel, however, it is still unclear whether the two incidents are connected.
"Enough is enough! All of the law enforcement agencies that we have here in the city of Philadelphia are active and working together to make sure that all the resources needed are available to solve these crimes," Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker said at the press conference.
