Haley concedes – Trump against Biden now fixed

Donald Trump scored an outstanding victory in the primaries in 15 US states on "Super Tuesday". His last remaining rival for the Republican presidential nomination, Nikki Haley, dropped out of the race and announced that she would not support Trump. Biden remains unrivaled, but he has a problem.

In previous elections, "Super Tuesday" was a big event. Favorites fell behind, outsiders stormed to the front. The pre-election results from Iowa and New Hamphsire, which had previously been analyzed down to the smallest detail, lost their impact. However, there was no magic in this "Super Tuesday".

It was the expected result: Donald Trump won the majority in 14 of the 15 states where voting took place. Only in Vermont did Nikki Haley triumph. And Joe Biden was able to win everywhere - without competition. Except in the "outer territory" of American Samoa. There, the largely unknown candidate Jason Palmer won. Out of 91 votes cast, he received 51 - a curiosity, but of no significance.

Haley withdraws from the race
Immediately after the results were announced, Haley decided to withdraw from the race after all. This means that another duel between Trump and Biden is a foregone conclusion, even if Trump has not yet secured the 1215 votes required for the nomination. However, this will be the case in the next two weeks, when further primaries are scheduled. And even if Nikki Haley had no chance, she was still a nuisance for Trump. She also announced that she would not be supporting Trump in the race for the presidency. "Trump has to earn our votes," she said at her farewell rally.

This could become a problem for the 77-year-old. Because by the end of the race, Haley's campaign had become a rallying point for the various anti-Trump forces in the party, including some wealthy donors. Indeed, Haley resonates with moderate conservative voters who find Trump too extreme and too old, and who are also concerned about the criminal cases against him. The fact that Haley won in Vermont and achieved double-digit percentages in other states are also warning signs for Trump. After all, the sectarian support he enjoys among his right-wing base will not be enough to defeat Biden on November 5. Rather, it will depend on him scoring points with voters in the political center.

In an initial statement on Nikki Haley's withdrawal, incumbent President Joe Biden appealed for her support. Donald Trump had made it clear that he did not want Haley's supporters, Biden said. He wanted to make it clear that there was a place for her in his election campaign.

Biden remains controversial
For Biden, "Super Tuesday" was a barometer of public opinion. Polls show him increasingly falling behind Trump. And above all, it showed that so-called non-white voters are increasingly refusing to support him. In Minnesota, around 20 percent of participants demonstratively marked "undecided" for the Democrats, in Michigan it was 13 percent. In other federal states, too, the "undecideds" scratched the double-digit percentage mark. They criticize Biden's pro-Israeli stance in the Middle East conflict.

This could be the reason why Biden has now made a small U-turn. In a current draft resolution, the USA is urging "an immediate ceasefire of approximately six weeks in the Gaza Strip combined with the release of all hostages". The original draft had only referred to a "temporary ceasefire". At least nine votes and no veto from the USA, France, Great Britain, Russia or China are required to pass the resolution. As a close ally, Washington had previously blocked resolutions that ran counter to Israel's interests. The decisions of the most powerful UN body are binding for all members of the United Nations and can be enforced by force of arms if necessary.

Momentous decision
What conclusions can be drawn from "Super Tuesday"? Experts do not want to overestimate the results and polls. The election is still eight months away, and for many US citizens the election is not yet a priority. Conversely, voters already know their candidates very well. Biden is the incumbent president, Trump is the former president and has also been a public figure for decades. An editorial in the political magazine "The Atlantic" says: "It's time for voters to take a deep breath, deal with the world as it is, and then decide what they really want. When they will make one of the most consequential decisions in American history."
