Wrestling icon dies at the age of 61
Great sadness in the wrestling scene: Former superstar Virgil has died at the age of 61. The US-American had suffered numerous health setbacks in recent years.
In 2022, the wrestling icon suffered two strokes and was diagnosed with dementia and colon cancer shortly afterwards. Virgil, whose real name was Michael Jones, died on Wednesday at the age of 61.
"We will remember him forever"
"It is with great sadness that I bring news to the Jones family that our beloved Michael Jones, who we knew and loved as 'Virgil', 'Vincent', 'Soul Train Jones' and more names, passed away peacefully in the hospital this morning," wrestling referee Mark Charles III wrote in an emotional post via Facebook. "I ask for prayers for him and his family. We will remember him forever."
Mathematics instead of wrestling
He made his wrestling debut in 1985. Virgil rose to fame as Ted DiBiase's valet and bodyguard, turning on his "boss" a little later and becoming a crowd favorite. In 2000, he ended his career and became a math teacher at a high school in Pittsburgh.
