Attack in talk show
Biden: “Trump doesn’t remember his wife’s name”
The incumbent US President Joe Biden is repeatedly attacked for his old age - his Republican rival Donald Trump also likes to question his suitability. In an interview, he turned the tables and explained to applause from the audience: "He's about my age, but he can't remember his wife's name."
The two older men, who are likely to contest the race for the highest office in the land, are giving each other no quarter in the election campaign. Time and again, the 81-year-old Democrat has been attacked for his age or supposed memory lapses. Biden used the late-night talk show with presenter Seth Mayers to lash out at his rival.
This post shows Trump's appearance to which Biden was referring:
Because at least he knew his wife's name, he said - unlike his 77-year-old opponent. He was referring to a video that had previously been shown on the program. It showed Trump apparently calling his wife Melania "Mercedes". However, users on social media pointed out that the real estate mogul was probably referring to the organizer of the event, Mercedes Schlapp.
Meyers explained in the interview that Biden's advanced age was "a real problem for American voters". Biden countered that it was about "how old your ideas are".
Biden: Trump is taking country back decades
Trump wants to take the country back to the time before Roe v. Wade, he said, referring to the ruling that established a constitutional, nationwide right to abortion in 1973. A year and a half ago, the US Supreme Court, which has a very conservative cast by Trump, overturned the right to abortion. Since then, the right to abortion is no longer enshrined in the constitution and the decision lies with the individual US states.
Biden joked at the start of the interview
On entering the stage, Biden also poked fun at himself by initially pretending to be lost. The oldest president in US history had recently come under fire for several lapses. A new duel between Biden and Trump is looming in the presidential election on November 5.
