Refugees in Vienna
Do you want to go back to Ukraine?
Two years have passed since Moscow attacked Ukraine. 30,000 refugees are now living in Vienna. Whether they want to stay or return home depends on their fate. We spoke to those affected.
Whenever Russia launches a wave of attacks on a particular Ukrainian city, the beds are made up in Hütteldorf - because two or three days later, newly arrived refugees are standing outside the door of the "Schlossberg" arrival center in Ukraine, where they receive advice and a roof over their heads.
Between hope and hopelessness
The arrival center in the former youth hostel was opened last May by Volkshilfe with the Vienna Social Fund. Two years after the start of the war, there is no longer a need for large halls for new arrivals. However, instead of 300 to 400 people seeking help per week a year ago, there are still 300 to 400 per month.
