Technical defect
Car burns out completely on highway
A moment of shock for a driver traveling on the Swiss A13 motorway on Tuesday: suddenly there was smoke coming from the engine compartment and shortly afterwards the car was on fire.
Every driver's nightmare came true on Tuesday morning at around 7.20 a.m. on the Swiss A13 between St. Margrethen and Sargans, just over the border with Vorarlberg: a 39-year-old man was driving his car in the first lane of the A13 highway when he noticed that the car was suddenly no longer producing the usual power. The car also began to smoke heavily.
He steered his car onto the emergency lane, got out and opened the hood, where not only a thick, jet-black cloud of smoke was rising, but flames were already flickering out from under the hood. Shortly afterwards, the car was fully ablaze, the meter-high flames visible for miles around. The fire department finally extinguished the fire, and the damage to property is estimated at around 14,000 Swiss francs (14,000 euros) - a costly affair. The cause of the fire was probably a technical defect.
