Collapse on construction site
Missing man in Florence only recovered dead
Five days after the collapse at a construction site in Florence, the body of the last missing person has now been recovered. The deceased was a 56-year-old worker from Morocco. This brings the death toll from the accident to five dead and three injured.
One Italian, one Tunisian and three Moroccans lost their lives. The accident occurred on Friday and the last body was discovered under one of the toppled pillars late on Tuesday. The three injured are from Romania and their lives are not in danger.
Following the accident, Italy's head of government Georgia Meloni is planning a meeting of the Council of Ministers on Wednesday to discuss measures to improve safety in the workplace. Rome said that undeclared work on construction sites must be combated more actively. "There must be no regression in occupational health and safety," said Labor Minister Marina Calderone.
It was reported four days ago that a worker was still missing after the accident. Dog teams were deployed in the search. Rescue workers reported that a large load-bearing beam of a roof had collapsed with the attic floor. It had been the construction of a new supermarket (see video above).
