1.1 billion euros
Scholz and Selenskyj put together new arms package
Germany has promised Ukraine a further arms package worth around 1.1 billion euros. This includes the delivery of 36 tank and wheeled howitzers from industrial stocks, 120,000 rounds of artillery ammunition, two additional air defense systems and Iris-T missiles.
Chancellor Olaf Scholz outlined the package on Friday during a joint appearance with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Selenskyj in Berlin. The new security agreement between the two countries represents a "historic step", said Scholz.
"As long as it takes"
The document stipulates that Germany will continue to support Ukraine in its defense against the Russian war of aggression - "as long as it takes", Scholz reiterated. In addition, Germany would support Ukraine "in building up modern, resilient armed forces to deter any future attack".
"Putin has not achieved a single one of his goals," said Scholz, adding that the Ukrainian armed forces, on the other hand, had been able to liberate more than half of the territories occupied by Russian troops. "The resilience of the people in Ukraine is admirable."
Selenskyj: Germany's help is crucial
Zelensky noted that international military aid for his country was waning. Support from Germany in particular is crucial. The Russian armed forces currently had a decisive advantage with their artillery on the front line.
Billions and billions
Germany has provided around 7.1 billion euros for military support for Ukraine in 2024 and a further six billion euros in commitment appropriations for subsequent years. In total, Germany has provided services and funds amounting to around 28 billion euros, making it the second largest military supporter of Ukraine after the USA.
From Berlin to Paris
After his meeting with Scholz and the German Federal President Frank Walter Steimeier, Selenskyj will travel on to Paris. There he is due to sign a bilateral security agreement with French President Emmanuel Macron in the evening.
