Partial success for Biden
Republican majority in US House of Representatives shrinks
Following a special election in a constituency in New York, the Republicans' slim majority in the US House of Representatives has shrunk further. The seat had become vacant because the chamber had excluded the scandalous politician George Santos. According to a projection by Edison Research, Democrat Tom Suozzi won the vacant seat.
Santos had spread numerous lies in his biography and had been charged with fraud. The Democratic victory means that the Republican majority in the House of Representatives has shrunk to 219 votes to 213.
A momentous loss of seats
Suozzi's victory will have an immediate impact in Washington. Following his inauguration, Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson's room for maneuver will shrink. In future, the Trump disciple can only afford to lose two votes on partisan bills. Until the election in November, the Republicans cannot really afford any dissenters.
The right-wing fringe of the Republicans in the House of Representatives has long been opposed to further US aid for Ukraine. A corresponding package was recently passed in the US Senate after months of trench warfare. Johnson has already announced his intention to reject the package of measures. However, the loss of his seat is likely to make it even more difficult to continue blocking the aid.
