More and more US censorship
Book bans: This is the situation in our schools
In addition to the "Diary of Anne Frank" or artist biographies such as Lady Gaga's, even dictionaries (!) are now banned in schools in Florida. While other US states, especially those with conservative governments, also rely on censorship, this is hardly an issue in our educational institutions. Krone+ asked under what circumstances even Hitler's "Mein Kampf" is allowed in school libraries in this country and what challenges are faced in terms of immigration and LGBTQIA+.
Hard to believe, but true: as published by the US authors' association PEN America, five dictionaries such as "Webster's Dictionary & Thesaurus for Students" are now banned in schools in Escambia County, Florida. In addition, eight encyclopedias such as the "Guinness Book of World Records" and "Ripley's Believe it or Not" have been censored. "All for fear that they might violate the state's new prohibition laws around sexually offensive school materials," writes PEN Editorial Director Lisa Tolin.
