"Grossly negligent"
Cause of fatal Flixbus accident clarified
In a tragic bus accident in Carinthia last summer, 19-year-old Jana from Upper Austria lost her life. Numerous other passengers were injured and taken to hospital. The investigation into the cause proved to be difficult.
Was it the grabbing of a water bottle, as the Ukrainian bus driver told the police? Or had a "flying driver change" led to the fatal accident, as was also speculated?
As reported, the investigation into the serious accident involving a Flixbus near Micheldorf is now complete. Initially, it was assumed that the Ukrainian driver had made a driving error, which is "only" being tried at the district court.
"Should not have been allowed to drive"
However, the public prosecutor's office in Klagenfurt has now decided to press tougher charges: "We are assuming gross negligence manslaughter," says spokeswoman Tina Frimmel-Hesse. The penalty is up to three years, and the regional court has jurisdiction. Reason: "The camera in the bus shows that the driver's eyes had already closed, he was extremely tired and shouldn't have been driving!"
