Last weekend, a Jewish student (30) was beaten up in the street in Berlin. The suspect is a 23-year-old who is said to have a pro-Palestinian stance. The German government's anti-Semitism commissioner has now spoken out, calling it an "appalling attack".

"I am appalled by the violent attack on a Jewish student in the middle of Berlin at the weekend," said the German government's anti-Semitism commissioner, Felix Klein, on Monday. He called on the Free University of Berlin to consider the possible exmatriculation of the 23-year-old suspect. The idea "that Jews are attacked and seriously injured on German streets because they are Jews" is "intolerable."

As reported, a 30-year-old student was walking with an acquaintance (24) in the Mitte district on Saturday night when they encountered their 23-year-old fellow student. The older student is said to have a pro-Israeli stance on social networks, while the younger student has a pro-Palestinian stance. This could also have been the reason for their argument.

Fractures on the face
It did not stop at words. The younger man is accused of punching his opponent several times and finally kicking him on the ground. The 30-year-old suffered fractures to his face as a result and was taken to hospital. There is said to be no danger to life.

According to the police, the younger man fled but was found at his home. The smartphone was seized during a search. The investigation is still ongoing.
