Already 9th execution
Another protester (23) executed in Iran
23-year-old Mohammed Ghobadlu had taken part in demonstrations in Iran shortly after the outbreak of protests at the end of the day. This was enough for the regime to execute the young man on Tuesday morning. The organization Amnesty International declared that his confession was forced through torture.
The Iranian judiciary had accused Ghobadlu of killing a police officer during protests against the government, reported the Misan portal, which is considered the mouthpiece of the authorities. He was sentenced to death for "corruption on earth" and was hanged early this morning.
No chance of appeal against death sentence
As "Time" reported, many people demonstrated on Tuesday outside Rajai Shahr prison, where the anti-government prisoner was being held, when they learned that the death sentence was to be carried out. His lawyer explained that the execution was "completely illegal" - Ghobadlou had been deprived of the right to appeal against the death sentence. The young man was imprisoned for almost 500 days.
Amnesty criticized the fact that the death sentence was imposed in an unfair sham trial, that the "confessions" were forced through torture and that Ghobadlou's mental illness was not taken into account. The young man had been under the supervision of a psychiatric clinic since the age of 15 due to bipolar disorder. International laws would prohibit the use of the death penalty against people with mental disabilities.
Nine protesters already executed
The nationwide protests against the government in 2022 were triggered by the death of 22-year-old Iranian woman Mahsa Amini. After her headscarf slipped, she was arrested by the morality police and died a few days later - presumably due to the violence during her arrest. The regime violently suppressed the demonstrations and arrested many protesters. In the meantime, the Islamic Republic has executed nine people who took part in the protests.
