With note in basket
One-month-old baby abandoned in Milan
A 53-year-old man was in for a surprise on Thursday afternoon when he opened the front door of his apartment in Milan and found a basket containing a baby. The baby boy, about four weeks old, was discovered on the doorstep of an apartment in the Milan suburb of Giambellino. He was in good health, Italian media reported.
A note in Arabic was found in the basket. The mother is said to have died in childbirth and the father was unable to look after the child, it read. The baby was immediately taken to hospital.
Investigations into the identity of the mother begun
On site, the Carabinieri tried to find out what had happened. They questioned the residents of the apartments on the second floor of the building, where several migrant families live. An investigation was launched to find out whether a woman had actually died in childbirth in recent weeks.
Similar case at Easter
The alarm was raised by a tenant, an Egyptian, who found the bundle of people on his doorstep. On Easter Sunday, a baby was left at the Mangiagalli clinic in Milan. A note was also found in this case: "My name is Enea, I was born in hospital," the note read. Enea was adopted by a Lombard couple in May.
