Power outage paralyzed half the city at 5 a.m.

Everything remained dark: shortly before 5 a.m. on Tuesday, the power went out in large parts of the city of Wels. The problem was apparently resolved after around three quarters of an hour. 9365 households were affected.

At 4.51 a.m. on Tuesday morning, the power went out in the city center of Wels and in areas of Thalheim. According to the municipal energy supplier eww, the reason for this was a cable fault in a medium-voltage cable between the central substation and Traunpark.

Around 9000 households affected
The fault was repaired after around 40 minutes and the lights came back on in 9365 households at 5.31 am. "We are currently analyzing the incident in detail in order to minimize the likelihood of such faults in the future," said eww press spokesman Thomas Holl.

Power grid underground
The average downtime in the Wels Strom grid area in 2023 was 48 seconds per customer. "The reasons for this lie in the underground electricity grid in Wels. This is because power outages in Austria are usually triggered by weather and storm damage, which cannot affect underground grids," says the energy supplier.
