Law against trans people in women’s sports

The Republican-majority US House of Representatives passed a bill on Tuesday that would prohibit trans people at schools and universities from taking part in sports competitions with other women and girls. Passage by the Senate is considered unlikely. 

The bill defines gender as "based solely on a person's reproductive biology and genes at birth".

It would also prohibit trans people from being part of a women's sports team at a state-funded school or university. In the House of Representatives, 218 members voted in favor of the bill, including two Democrats. In order to be passed in the Senate, it needs a majority of 60 votes. It is considered unlikely that enough Democratic supporters can be found.

Symbolic victory
For the Republicans, who have been campaigning on the issue of trans people in women's sport for years, the passing of the bill was a symbolic victory. "The Republicans in the House of Representatives have once again stood up for women," said the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Republican Mike Johnson.

The lobby group Equality California, on the other hand, criticized the bill as "another attempt to deny trans youth the dignity and respect they deserve".
