We still need billions

It was perhaps the most important decision taken by the federal government, which is still in office. In view of the war in Ukraine and the USA's unwillingness to continue spending so much of its own money and military on Europe's (and therefore Austria's) security, the Turquoise-Greens decided on an armament program worth billions.

Anyone who has ever taken a discreet look inside a barracks knows that this was more than necessary. Half a dozen governments and defense ministers have cut the army to almost nothing or have been unable to push through demands for urgently needed budget increases for investments.

Now, however, the usually unloved defense department is becoming extremely attractive: neutrality is finally being brought to life - and yes, even with modern weapons systems and equipment.

Twelve small two-seater Leonardo subsonic jets are now being purchased for one billion euros to replace the decommissioned Saab 105s. Further investments must follow, including the missile defense systems and later also the possible Eurofighter successors. Fortunately, some of this has been set by law until 2026.

It would be a sign of a new political culture in Austria if the necessity of the investments were put beyond dispute rather than cheap change being exchanged. Safety knows no party politics.

At least the potential new coalition partners agree on this.
