Accident with truck leads to closure of the Brenner highway

Lorry drivers needed a lot of patience on the Brenner freeway and ultimately also on the Inntal freeway in Tyrol on Thursday morning. A collision in the border tunnel on the Italian side caused a closure and a long tailback of trucks. The effects could be felt for hours.

The accident occurred at around 5.30 am. In response to an inquiry from the Tyrolean traffic department, the "Krone" newspaper reported a collision between a small truck and a heavy goods vehicle in the construction zone of the border tunnel between Austria and Italy on the South Tyrolean side.

There have been no reports of injuries so far. However, the impact on transit traffic was enormous. 

Road users traveling southbound must expect to lose a lot of time.

Closure lifted, but tailbacks
As a result, the Brenner highway in the direction of Italy had to be completely closed to truck traffic. A traffic jam developed that was over 30 kilometers long. "Road users must expect to lose a lot of time when driving south," concluded the Öamtc. As the police reported in response to a Krone inquiry, cars were still able to drive.

Truck stops and metering
At around 9.30 a.m., the Tyrolean state traffic department said that there were still 15 kilometers of truck traffic jams on the A13 Brenner freeway between Nösslach and Patsch. As a result, transit traffic had already been stopped on the A12 Inntalautobahn near Pettnau in the Oberland and near Vomp in the Unterland until it cleared. "Source and destination traffic was exempt". Truck traffic was also controlled at the Kufstein border crossing.
