Airport near Kursk hit by ATACMS missiles

According to unconfirmed reports, the Ukrainian army has attacked a Russian military airport near Kursk with artillery missiles from the US ATACMS system. The attack reportedly took place on Monday night.

The Kursk-Vostochny airport was hit by at least two missiles with multiple warheads, according to reports. It would be the second use of ATACMS missiles on Russian territory since Washington recently allowed Kiev to carry out attacks with long-range weapons against military targets in Russia.

What is ATACMS?

The ATACMS (an acronym for Army TACtical Missile System) is a US-made short-range ballistic missile with a range below that of medium-range missiles (800 to 5500 kilometers).

Attack not yet confirmed by the military
No details of the extent of the damage were initially available. The reports could not be independently verified and neither the Ukrainian nor the Russian military initially confirmed the attack.

The first ATACMS attack the previous week targeted the headquarters of the Russian forces deployed near Bryansk. With around 50,000 soldiers, including 10,000 fighters from North Korea, they want to recapture the area near Kursk that has been occupied by Ukraine since the summer.
