Boris Becker mourns the death of his mother Elvira

Boris Becker is in mourning: the ex-tennis star's mother has died at the age of 89 - just one day before his birthday.

"I can confirm the death of Elvira Becker," said Becker's lawyer Oliver Moser to Bild newspaper. "Boris Becker is in deep mourning."

As the German newspaper also reported, Elvira Becker was found lifeless in her apartment on Thursday morning. Her son, who currently lives in Milan with his wife Lilian and celebrates his 57th birthday on Friday, was immediately informed of his mother's death.

Becker had a close relationship with his mother. It was only on Mother's Day that the former tennis ace dedicated loving words to his mom, writing on Instagram alongside snapshots of a meeting: "The one and only ... Elvira! All the best for Mother's Day."

During Becker's life full of ups and downs, mom Elvira was always by his side. She was only absent at Becker's third wedding to Lilian, which was celebrated in Portofino in September. 

With a heavy heart, as she revealed to Bild shortly before her death. "I can't cope with my health, my legs can't take it anymore. It's a long journey."

Boris Becker's father Karl-Heinz died of cancer back in 1999.
