EU wants to impose new sanctions against Iran

New EU sanctions are to be imposed on Iran this Monday. According to EU officials, the member states want to react to the delivery of ballistic missiles to Russia with these punitive measures. 

This step is seen as a new breach of taboo due to the ongoing Russian war of aggression against Ukraine.

Iran Air no longer allowed to land in the EU
The first sanctions due to the missile deliveries were already imposed in October. Among other things, they were directed against the state-owned Iranian airline Iran Air, which can now no longer fly to EU countries without risking its aircraft being detained there.

Assets are to be frozen
The new sanctions are intended to affect other players involved in Iran's ballistic missile program and the supply of these and other weapons to Russia. The EU has so far kept the details secret. One of the reasons for this is that the punitive measures provide for assets held in the EU to be frozen. Advance notification could therefore enable those affected to bring their assets to safety.

The formal decision on the sanctions is to be taken by the foreign ministers of the member states in Brussels on Monday. They will meet there for their November meeting.
