Winter months: risk of frost for water pipes

In sub-zero temperatures, gardens and cellars are once again at risk of damage. For this reason, the water pipe association once again advises caution. 

When temperatures fall below the frost line in winter, water meters, water pipes and heating pipes are constantly exposed to a certain danger. The Northern Burgenland Water Pipeline Association therefore advises caution again in the coming months.

Pipes can burst
Water pipes in the garden or in the cellar can freeze and eventually burst in prolonged sub-zero temperatures. According to the experts, the greatest risk of frost usually exists in unfinished buildings, unoccupied houses, open cellar windows and water meters installed in shafts.

It is therefore important to insulate and drain the water pipe properly. Taps should be left open when garden pipes are empty to prevent the seals from freezing.
