Woman killed in Slovenia: Pre-trial detention for ex-partner

The 39-year-old Iranian man who, as reported, was arrested in Klagenfurt on Saturday on suspicion of murder, is now in custody in Klagenfurt prison. 

The man is suspected of having killed his 33-year-old ex-partner, with whom he has three underage children, on the airport grounds on Thursday. He has been remanded in custody pending extradition to Slovenia.

The man was arrested in his apartment in Klagenfurt on Saturday on the basis of a European arrest warrant because he is suspected of stabbing the Iranian woman living in Klagenfurt to death on Thursday. The man is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court. According to the public prosecutor's office, he had three children with the Iranian woman, aged five, seven and 14. They were taken into care by the youth welfare office in Carinthia.

The woman's body, which was discovered early Thursday morning in the parking lot of Ljubljana Airport, had been stabbed several times. According to the public prosecutor's office in Klagenfurt, the murder weapon was a knife. The suspect confessed during questioning. It could take "several weeks" before he is handed over to Slovenia, said Sandra Agnoli, spokeswoman for the public prosecutor's office in Klagenfurt.
