Man hides under comforter after burglary

A burglar in Vienna's Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus had a somewhat unsuccessful escape attempt on Friday morning. After WEGA officers got wind of the 30-year-old man's ongoing theft, he tried to flee through the window. The suspect's hiding place must have made the police smile in the end. 

The police were called to the burglary in progress in an apartment in Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus at around 8 am. When the WEGA special unit entered the premises, the suspected burglar had already fled through a window eight meters above the ground. Traces on the house wall and a tree in the courtyard indicated that he had lowered himself down the façade and then jumped onto the tree.

Escaped into a vacant apartment
The police then searched the inner courtyard and found the suspect, a 30-year-old Syrian, in a vacant first floor apartment where he had hidden under a comforter. Not a good hiding place - the man was arrested immediately. The apartment owner's stolen cell phone was also found on him, and his clothes and shoes had marks that pointed to the front of the house.

Had undergrowth in his hair
There was also undergrowth in his hair. A chisel was recovered as an instrument of crime. The Vienna public prosecutor's office decided to charge him on suspicion of burglary at large.
