So, have you done it yet? From November 1, the so-called situational winter tire obligation applies - in other words, in the event of snow or ice, the car may only be started with winter tires. That's why Upper Austria's garages are currently working flat out to change the tires. A "Krone" round-up reveals some price differences.

At 20 euros, Reifen Hieke in Helfenberg and M Worx in Kirchberg ob der Donau offer the cheapest tire changes. The latter's Managing Director Markus Höllinger has not raised prices for two years now: "Not everything always has to be more expensive. It just pays off, so I don't need to make it more expensive. There are two of us and our costs haven't risen."

Appointments are in demand
In Eferding, Kfz Eichbauer offers the changeover for 25 euros, at Auto Kriegner in Grieskirchen you pay 34 euros, at Lagerhaus and at Bamminger Kraftfahrzeuge in Wels you pay 36 euros.

Anyone who needs a spontaneous appointment now will probably have to call around a bit, because: "We are fully booked until November 15," says Höllinger. Claudia Kriegner from the car dealership of the same name in Grieskirchen explains: "Appointments won't be available again until next week." The booking situation is somewhat more relaxed at the other garages.

Winter tires until April 15
The situational winter tire obligation applies until April 15. Then the mechanics will be busy changing tires again. However, there is no legal obligation for summer tires.
