50 cars demolished: Afghan is now in custody

The Afghan man who is said to have indiscriminately demolished countless cars in Innsbruck at the weekend and was tracked down in the course of a manhunt is now in custody. The number of victims has been revised upwards once again by the criminal investigation department.

"The suspect was sent to Innsbruck prison by order of the public prosecutor's office. The man largely confessed to the charges," reported the police.

More victims than initially assumed
The 27-year-old is said to have damaged 50 vehicles last weekend. Previously there had been talk of 30 to 40. According to the investigators, the amount of damage is in the six-figure euro range!

The initially unknown vandal left a trail of destruction across Innsbruck on Sunday night. First in the areas of Fürstenweg, Unterbergerstraße, Franz-Fischer-Straße, Sonnenburgstraße and Speckbacherstraße - later in Kaufmannstraße in the Pradl district.

Suspect caught in commercial area
"Shortly after midnight, a suspect was identified and arrested in the Rossau industrial estate," it was reported at the time. A "heavy folding bicycle lock was found on the 27-year-old Afghan and seized" - he is said to have used it to hit the cars.
