Racer jumps over a hilltop into rocky terrain

A terrible winter sports accident on the Pitztal Glacier in Tyrol on Sunday: a participant in a ski race jumped over a snow hill and landed in rocky terrain that was out of his sight. The 61-year-old Czech skier rolled over several times and suffered serious injuries.

The serious accident happened shortly after 11 am. The 61-year-old racer, who was taking part in the FIS Master Cup, was skiing downhill from the Brunnkogel mountain station on a blue slope.

"The Czech skier took a jump on a snow bank at the edge of a drag lift track, jumped over the drag lift track and landed after the jump on the unobservable, unstable rock slope behind it," reported the police.
