Process technology in women’s hands at voestalpine

Martina from St. Pantaleon is a skilled worker at voestalpine in Linz. The 19-year-old proves that technical professions are by no means just for men. She successfully completed her apprenticeship as a process technician at voestalpine and knows that this is the right place for her.

"I realized at school that I liked math," says Martina from St. Pantaleon. After polytechnic school, she therefore decided to do an apprenticeship in process technology at voestalpine in Linz. After four years, she now works in the melting metallurgy department in crucible operations.

"I'm in the steel mill, which means we process the pig iron from the blast furnace and process it further - and I'm right in the middle of it, in the heart of voestalpine, so to speak," reports the 19-year-old. She completed her apprenticeship together with two other girls and 28 boys.

"As a process technician, I'm responsible for the use of tools and equipment on production machines and production lines."

She can heartily recommend the path to other girls - because her own expectations were exceeded by the actual training: "I never thought I would like my job in the steel mill so much," laughs Martina, who is completing the apprenticeship with a high school diploma and may want to specialize in a field afterwards: "But I'll decide that after I graduate in 2025 - who knows where I'll end up."

Around 410 young professionals are currently being trained at the state-of-the-art training center in Linz. There are around 20 apprenticeships to choose from.
