Austrian drivers escape fines from Italy

Austrian drivers in Italy can rejoice. This is because fines cannot currently be sent to Austria. The reason for this is the unilateral termination of the European license plate transmission system.

In Merano in South Tyrol alone, a good 4,000 traffic fines worth 230,000 euros could not be sent to just as many German, Austrian and, most recently, Dutch drivers because these three EU states are blocking access to the data. For months now, it has no longer been possible to retrieve information on German and Austrian cars via the EUCARIS system, which enables the EU-wide exchange of vehicle and driving license register data.

Austria blocks exchange due to technical defects
Technical defects in the Italian system are cited as the reason for this. Access to the system has therefore been blocked for Italy. However, the government in Rome is also dealing with the problem.

Salvini promises to rectify the situation soon
During a question and answer session in parliament, Transport Minister Matteo Salvini assured that the data from Austria, Germany and the Netherlands will be accessible again for Italy on the EUCARIS platform in the near future. The minister spoke of technical problems that are to be resolved.
