Civil courage saves lives: Supporting municipalities

New plaque for support and help against violence against women in Lower Austria: municipalities are being put in the spotlight for their commitment.

As we know, violence has many faces. Whether at home behind closed doors or on the street, the danger for affected women lurks everywhere. Civil courage can work wonders. And often save lives. "Above all, women need courage to free themselves from a violent relationship. Courage to talk about the violent situation and courage to get help," explains Elisabeth Cinatl from the Network of Austrian Women's and Girls' Counseling Centers.

Many of those affected bear their painful fate in secret out of shame. Receiving support from people in their immediate environment helps them to escape violent relationships. This is why the support networks in the municipalities are constantly being expanded. The commitment can be reported back by means of a catalog of measures. Shortly before Christmas, all participating municipalities will be presented with a specially created plaque as a thank you.

Look and help
The motto in this country is clear: every woman should know where she can get help if she is affected by violence. "We have numerous initiatives that offer victims protection and support quickly and unbureaucratically. Violence has many faces, civil courage even more", says Provincial Councillor Christiane Teschl-Hofmeister.
