Drugged driver injured in accident in highway tunnel

It could have ended much worse: On Sunday morning, a 29-year-old under the influence of drugs drove a van off the road in the Roppen tunnel on the Inntal highway in Tyrol and hit the tunnel wall. The driver, who also does not have a driver's license, was seriously injured in the accident.

The 29-year-old man from Bosnia and Herzegovina, who lives in Tyrol, was driving a van on the A12 from Pettneu am Arlberg towards Innsbruck shortly after 9.15 a.m. on Sunday. However, in the Roppen tunnel, he suddenly veered off the road to the right and hit the tunnel wall.

Taken to hospital with injuries
First responders set the rescue chain in motion. "A rapid test carried out on the driver involved in the accident confirmed the suspicion of drug impairment," said the police. Furthermore, the 29-year-old was not in possession of a driver's license. After first aid, the injured man was taken to hospital in Zams by the ambulance service. The man will be charged.

Tunnel had to be closed
The tunnel was closed in the eastbound direction for the duration of the accident investigation and recovery of the damaged vehicle until shortly before 11 am. "During this time, all traffic in Imst was diverted onto the main road," said the police.
