Accident in Tauern tunnel

Heavy travel weekend with traffic jams and tunnel closures

Already on Saturday morning there were delays in travel traffic, some of which lasted for hours. An accident in the Tauern Tunnel caused additional waiting times. Despite the closure being lifted shortly after 12 noon, the traffic jam was slow to ease.

The end of the summer vacation is approaching. Some people are using the last few days to head south once again, while others are traveling home again. The consequence: traffic jams on the Tauernautobahn. 

Despite the break in the tunnel renovation between Golling and Werfen, there were already several traffic jams on the Tauern freeway today, Saturday. Holidaymakers heading south in particular had to wait between the Walserberg and the Tauern tunnel in the morning.

An accident-related closure of the tunnel at around 10.30 a.m. added to the traffic jams, the ÖAMTC announced in a press release. Shortly after 12 noon, however, the tunnel was reopened in the direction of Villach. The traffic jam slowly receded.

On the northbound route towards Salzburg, vacationers from Germany and Austria in particular had to expect more time on the familiar routes from Italy, Croatia and Slovenia. Before the Karawanken Tunnel (A11), waiting times in the direction of Austria were just under two hours and one hour in the direction of Slovenia. In the Helbergtunnel there was a block in the northbound direction on Saturday afternoon.
