Hepatitis: 65 new cases recently counted in Tyrol

The province of Tyrol is using World Hepatitis Day, which is this Sunday, to call for people to get vaccinated. Last year, more than 60 cases of hepatitis B and C were diagnosed.

Five hepatitis viruses are currently known: Hepatitis A, B, C, D and E. All five types of virus lead to liver inflammation (hepatitis). According to the World Health Organization (WHO), more than 250 million people worldwide were affected by chronic hepatitis B in 2022, and more than one million people still die from an infection every year.

"Early vaccination is recommended"
According to the province, a total of 65 cases of hepatitis B and C were diagnosed in Tyrol last year. To mark World Hepatitis Day on Sunday, Health Director Theresa Geley is calling for vaccination: "Early vaccination as part of the 'Tirol vaccination campaign' for infants, children and adolescents is particularly recommended."
