Hostage-taking in Hamburg: man threatened with grenades

An apparently mentally unstable man has triggered a major police operation in the Hamburg district of Lurup. He had previously barricaded himself in an apartment on the second floor of a house in Boberstraße. 

The man was overpowered by special forces after around two hours and taken into custody, according to a police spokesman in the evening. No one was injured.

The first emergency calls were reportedly received at around 8.25 pm. It was initially unclear whether the incident was a hostage situation and whether the man was armed.

According to "Bild", the man is said to have threatened with a Kalashnikov and grenades, among other things. It was initially unclear whether he actually had the weapons with him. The hostage is said to have been his mother.
