Second part of the Tegetthoff Bridge lifted into place

The expansion of the streetcar lines in Graz made visible progress on Sunday morning: from 7 a.m., the newly built northern bridge tandem of the Tegetthoff Bridge was lifted into its new position. According to Holding Graz, the work was completed shortly before 9 a.m. and the 64-meter-long, three-meter-high and six-meter-wide section was hung in place.

The lifting was carried out using mobile cranes weighing several tons. From Tuesday until August 5, work will now be carried out on the bridge structure before the roadway slab is created by September 2024. Track construction work will begin in October, with electrical installations, drainage and asphalting being completed in November. The Tegetthoff Bridge will open to traffic on November 29 - but only for private vehicles for the time being.

Wider, stronger, one vehicle lane less
The new bridge will be 1.25 meters wider than the old one and will have three lanes and two tracks with a load capacity of just under a thousand tons. One lane will be removed for pedestrians and cyclists.

The new 1.2-kilometre-long rail line from Jakominiplatz to Annenstraße is scheduled to go into operation at the end of November 2025. Test runs of the streetcars are scheduled for October 2025. The Radetzkystraße and Neutorgasse sections were completed in 2023/24. The costs for all the work amount to around 27 million euros.
