US missiles in Germany: Moscow threatens

Russia wants to respond to the planned stationing of US long-range missiles in Germany with military measures. According to Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov, this would compromise Russia's security.

The USA and Germany announced in a joint statement on Wednesday that new US long-range weapons, such as Tomahawk cruise missiles and hypersonic missiles currently still under development, are to be stationed in Germany from 2026. This is intended to serve as the USA's contribution "to integrated European deterrence".

Pistorius: "serious capability gap closed" 
According to German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, the US government's decision to station long-range weapons in Germany from 2026 closes a "serious capability gap" in Europe.

He could therefore not imagine that another US president would revise the plans announced on Wednesday, the SPD politician told Deutschlandfunk radio on Thursday.

"The USA wants us to invest and develop"
However, the temporary deployment also means that "the USA rightly expects us to invest in the development and procurement of such stand-off weapons ourselves". The temporary deployment will give Germany the time it needs to do this.

Among other things, the USA wants to station Tomahawk cruise missiles and supersonic weapons (hypersonic), which are still under development, in Germany from 2026.
