Traffic jams and lost time: the first federal states are starting their summer vacations this weekend. Many are heading south. 

Vienna, Lower Austria and Burgenland as well as some federal states in Germany start their vacations tomorrow, Friday. As a result, Carinthia's roads are expected to be very busy again.

However, Asfinag does not yet expect extreme congestion. "The Viennese are traveling on the A2, but experience has shown that there will hardly be any delays here," says spokesman Walter Mocnik. The situation is different on the A10. "That's our traffic jam hotspot every year."

Travelers should take a close look at the routes before their vacation, especially at the end of July. "There will be more traffic over the coming weekend, but it won't get really busy until the end of July, when Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg start their vacations," Mocnik continues.

The highway construction sites should not become a problem. "They are all two-lane. Unless there's an accident in the area, then of course you have to expect waiting times."
